Vascular Networks For Tissue Engineering:

Research Interests

Building 3D vascular networks with specific architectural features for tissue engineering

Dr Sasha Berdichevski

Repair of large tissues remains a major clinical challenge. In this context, tissue engineering may offer alternative for treating the damaged tissue. My project concerns with growing small blood vessels (vasculature), a major and essential component of living tissues. Creating vascular networks is critical for the survival of engineered tissues, due to ability of these structures to connect to the body and to efficiently transfer nutrients, oxygen and waste products. I specifically focus on 3-dimensional scaffolds with defined inner architecture, investigating blood vessel cells’ self-organization into vessel-like networks as function of scaffolds’ architecture, and studying the interactions between different cells seeded in a co-culture.
